Who we are
Hi, I’m Katie Bernardo—founder of South Island Youth Hockey .
South Island Youth Hockey was born from years of listening, learning, and leading in my community. I’ve spent over 15 years involved in youth sports, including long-standing leadership roles in both ball and ice hockey. I always prioritize player well-being, equity, and transparency.
After stepping down from my ball hockey leadership role due to frustrations with politics and systemic issues, I felt galvanized to act. My resignation was the push I needed to finally build the kind of hockey experience I’ve always envisioned: one rooted in integrity, inclusion, and development.
Throughout my career and roles, I’ve prioritized player and family safety. I’ve developed anonymous reporting and feedback systems and safety policies to strengthen accountability in sports, and I’ve worked hard to create a culture where all players feel seen and supported. I’m also committed to moving beyond the outdated culture that’s held hockey back—replacing it with a positive, inclusive environment that puts kids first.
South Island Youth Hockey is a for-profit business, but it’s built for the community. Woman-founded and run, it reflects everything I’ve learned about what truly works for kids: safe spaces, skill development, mentorship, accessibility, and fun—without pressure, politics, or gatekeeping. The profit structure is intentional: it allows us to operate sustainably, offer stipends to young coaches and mentors, grow programming, and give back where we can.
I also operate ICE Society (Inspiring Children to Empowerment)—a nonprofit committed to removing barriers so kids facing hardship can access sport. While ICE and South Island Youth Hockey are separate, they are deeply aligned in values. Together, we offer sponsorships, promote inclusion, and ensure cost or circumstance never determines a child’s ability to play.
As a single mom of two hockey-playing kids (and an artist)—each with their own strengths and challenges—I know the road isn’t always easy. But I also know what’s possible when kids are supported with care, community, and purpose. I’m here to build something for them—for all of us.
Thanks for being part of this journey. Let’s do hockey differently.
